Ivy Show and Luncheon on Monday, September 27th, 2010. Many attended and the Show was very successful with 90 entries - an increase of 20 over last year! Chaired by Dorothea Thompson and Vodrie McQuat, it was an excellent show with a creative and very challenging schedule. The quality and variety of the cultivars was outstanding – clearly members were diligent with regular spritzing and turning the plants over the past several months. For the Ontario Chapter, the Fall Show has proven to be a better time to show than the spring as the ivies enjoy the outdoor climate of the summer.

The three judges (2 Horticulture - 1 Floral Design) were most impressed with our challenging classes: outstanding topiaries, unique varieties of cultivars, and colourful floral designs. Some classes were sub-divided due to the many entries. The Miscellaneous Classes were new and especially exciting. A new class, Mother and Child, where the child is a rooted cutting from the mother plant in a separate pot was fun. Barbara Furlong’s miniature snail and baby were the Judge’s Choice and the talk of the show! Class 8 – A planter that contains Hedera helix, coleus and other compatible material that could be newly acquired tested our abilities.

The Floral Design Classes were magnificent with brilliant fall colours. The Parallel design class – Plant A Row and Grow A Row – a design in which three or more groupings are placed in a parallel manner with open spaces between the groupings, was new and demanding. In spite of this, many members stepped up to the challenge with very creative designs. Tea Time was very popular with many displaying tea sets resplendent with beautiful flowers and Fall Glory was spectacular with many interesting designs including Trudy’s unusual modern black bamboo armature with floating sun flowers (new variety without dark centres).

After a tasty lunch, the judges reviewed our entries with valuable comments on how members might strive for perfection. Happily one of our members was able to judge at the last minute due to the illness of one of the judges. A big thank you to Trudy Grantham for stepping in. The awards were English bone China cups and saucers “Ivy Lea”, and serving pieces decorated with ivy and berries or ivy and snow drops, topiary cache pots, ivy ceramic jug and an ivy tea pot.

Winners:

Judges Choice - Floral Design – Trudy Grantham

Judges Choice - Horticulture – Miscellaneous Class
Mother and Child - Barbara Furlong

Best in Show – Silver bowl awarded to Barbara Furlong,
Dorothy Lloyd, Sheila Kappele, Mary Jean Potter and Carolyn Ford

For all it was a most enjoyable show and we look forward to getting together for our next workshop.
